About the artwork

Kukatja People. 'Wangkartu Soak, near Jupiter Well WA 1998 by Helicopter Joe Tjungurrayi.

‘Helicopter’ Joe was born in 1946 and is from the Kukatja people in WA.

The work is a representation of the country where the artist led a traditional nomadic lifestyle in his younger years. He has depicted a central rock hole, Wangkartu, which supplies water to the surrounding country. It is fed by a central creek line which flows in the wet season. Other water sources are also shown, Pillal, Minyil and Tuwiltjarra. The surrounding country is dominated by parallel sand dunes.

Winemaker Notes
Handpicked on 13 March, from Block 1 (planted on Light sandy clay loam) and Block 2 (sandy loam over Callabonna clay). This is a 50/50 blend of the blocks, both parcels are 100% MV6 clone pinot noir. The fruit was hand sorted and the two distinct blocks were handled as two separate parcels in the winery. Gently destemmed into small open oak fermenters. 30% whole bunch in Block 2 only. Following a 3-4 day soaking the fermentation proceeded, peaking in temperature at 32ÂșC. The wine was pressed off skins after 14 days into tight grain French oak 500L puncheons for malolactic fermentation and maturation. 50% in one-year old puncheons and 50% in three-year old puncheons. It remained in oak for 12 months. Bottled 29 January 2019. (Alc 13.5%)
Tasting Notes
Deep crimson in colour. Highly detailed and floral bouquet of rose petals, violets and potpourri. This framed by an array of red fruits, strawberry, cherry, raspberry with a hint of Asian spice. The palate is plush and expansive, flowering red fruits and floral detail, the tannins are very fine and silky and coat the palate. The finish is fine though long and tightly wound with a mineral-edged savoury flourish. Cellared carefully this wine will ages gracefully for at least 20 years.
